Consumer demand for the latest AI technology is growing quickly. OpenAI’s new model, GPT-4o, has caused a huge increase in mobile revenue, even though it is free on the web. GPT-4o, launched on May 13, can process text, speech, and video.

It responds in real-time and offers various emotive voice options, making it much more powerful than previous models. This innovation is also encouraging more users to subscribe to OpenAI’s paid service, according to data from Appfigures.

OpenAI stated that GPT-4o would be available to free-tier users, but this does not apply to the ChatGPT mobile app. Mobile users must upgrade to the $19.99 monthly ChatGPT Plus subscription to use the latest model.

This strategy is boosting subscription demand among mobile users. It has caused the largest revenue increase OpenAI has ever seen on mobile devices.

ChatGPT mobile app's net revenue

According to Appfigures, the ChatGPT mobile app’s net revenue increased by 22% on the day GPT-4o launched and kept rising in the following days.

By Tuesday, net revenue had reached $900,000, almost double the app’s daily average of $491,000. This net revenue is calculated after Apple and Google take their commission.

Before this, ChatGPT’s second-largest increase was in April, but it was much smaller. It was just a day with unusually high revenue, not a significant jump.

The firm found that the ChatGPT mobile app earned $4.2 million in net revenue from May 13 to 17 across the App Store and Google Play. This is the largest revenue spike the app has seen. The increase shows there is strong consumer demand for testing the latest AI technology on mobile, even if it’s more expensive than a Netflix subscription.

ChatGPT mobile app earned 4.2 million

Apple’s App Store contributed most of the new revenue, with 81%. The U.S. was the top market, generating $1.8 million.

Other leading countries included Germany ($282,000), the U.K. ($212,000), Japan ($210,000), France ($147,000), Canada ($134,000), Korea ($123,000), Brazil ($117,000), Australia ($102,000), and Turkey ($89,000).

What we think?

I think the ChatGPT mobile app will keep growing fast. The new GPT-4o model is amazing and very popular. More people will want to try it, even if it costs money. This means more subscriptions and more revenue for OpenAI.

With so many countries showing interest, I believe the app will soon break more records. It’s exciting to see how AI technology is changing our world!
