Pairing GE universal remote codes should take two minutes. For most people it takes twenty, because they skip one thing: checking which version of remote they actually have. Every GE remote belongs to a code generation — CL3, CL4, CL5, or CL6 — and codes from one generation simply will not work on another. That single mismatch causes the overwhelming majority of setup failures.
Start there. Everything else follows.
GE Universal Remote Codes: Identifying Your Remote Version
Open the battery cover on the back of the remote. There is a printed label inside — it will read CL3, CL4, CL5, or CL6. That number determines which column of codes applies to you.
No label visible? Use this as a rough guide:
- Purchased before 2015 → almost certainly CL3
- Purchased between 2015 and 2020 → likely CL4 or CL5
- Purchased 2021 or later → typically CL5 or CL6
If still uncertain, skip codes entirely and use the auto-scan method. The remote will locate a working signal on its own.
Code Reference Table

Match your brand to your CL version. Try each code in sequence — left to right — before moving to the next row. CL5 and CL6 overlap considerably, so when CL6 entries come up empty, the CL5 column for the same brand is worth checking next.

Programming with a Code
Have your code ready and the device powered on before starting.
- Hold SETUP on the remote until the light comes on and does not flash
- Press the button corresponding to the device you are setting up — TV, DVD, or AUX
- Key in your code
- Aim at the device and press Power — a successful pair turns the device off
- Run a quick check on volume and input buttons before finishing
Getting power to work but not volume usually means the code covers only part of the device’s IR command set. The next code in the same brand row is the right move — do not start over from scratch.
Programming Without a Code
Two scan approaches exist depending on your model.
Newer models: Power on the device. Hold SETUP, press the device type button, then press Power in short repeated taps. The moment the device shuts off, immediately press Enter. The code that triggered the shutdown is now saved.
Older models: Select the device type, then key in 9-9-1. Press and hold both Power and CH+ together. Hold until the device goes dark. Release and press Enter to store it.
Each device — TV, soundbar, cable box — needs its own separate scan session. Running one scan does not pair multiple devices at once.
CL5 and CL6: The Practical Difference
CL6 arrived in 2023 with a trimmed-down library. Jasco removed codes that were producing the same IR signal as existing entries, so the list is shorter but not weaker. CL5 carries the largest code set of any generation and remains the most compatible across older hardware.
Practically speaking: CL6 remote users should exhaust CL6 options first, then check CL5 for the same brand if needed. CL3 and CL4 remotes accept three-digit and four-digit codes; CL5 and CL6 are four-digit only.
Fixing Common Problems

Nothing responds at all. Before touching the codes, check two things — the CL version label and the batteries. Entering a CL5 code into a CL3 remote produces no response regardless of how many times it is tried. Jasco support data indicates that wrong-version codes account for roughly four in ten pairing complaints. Fresh alkaline batteries solve most of the remaining cases.
Power works but other buttons do not. A partial response means the remote and device are communicating, but the code only covers a portion of the command set. The pairing is close, not correct. Moving to the next code in the same column tends to resolve this quickly.
IR sensor not reading the signal. Anything physically between the remote and the device’s receiver — a soundbar placed directly beneath a TV, a cable box tucked behind a panel, even strong ambient light in some cases — can interfere. Clear the path and test again before assuming a code issue.
Streaming stick not responding. Several popular streaming sticks operate exclusively over Bluetooth and have no IR receiver. No GE remote code will control them without a separate IR adapter. Check the product specs before spending time on code troubleshooting.
Factory Reset
When a remote has been previously programmed or is behaving unpredictably, clearing it out and starting fresh is the cleanest solution.
Hold SETUP until the indicator light holds steady. Press Mute. Press 0. Two blinks confirm the wipe is complete. Every previously stored pairing is now gone — TV, DVD, AUX, all of it. Reprogram each slot individually using the codes or scan methods above. A single device takes under two minutes with the right code already identified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Jasco publish the official code list?
At byjasco.com. The table above combines official Jasco entries with codes that have been confirmed working by the user community across all four CL versions.
My device turned off during the scan but then turned back on by itself — did it save?
Only if you pressed Enter the moment the device shut off. If it turned back on before you pressed Enter, the code was not locked in. Restart the scan.
Can one GE remote control a TV and soundbar at the same time?
Yes, using separate device slots. Program the TV to the TV slot and the soundbar to the AUX slot.
Fire TV and Roku codes are listed — but my stick still will not pair.
Sticks are the issue, not the codes. Roku sticks and Fire Sticks are Bluetooth-only on most models.
What happens if I enter a code from the wrong CL column?
Usually nothing — the device will not respond at all.
