If you own an electric vehicle other than a Tesla, you may feel anxious about finding a charger when you travel. Currently, no shopping areas guarantee the availability of EV chargers.

However, Google Maps is responding by adding new features. These updates will help EV drivers find charger locations and plan their charging stops.

Like Tesla’s navigation system, Google Maps will soon show recommended charging stations, estimated energy use, and charger availability during trip planning. Cars equipped with Google’s own technology will receive these updates first over the next few months, the company announced. This initial release will be through “Google Built-In,” Google’s driving software. The updates will be available worldwide.

Google Maps new features

Google Maps is an online tool that gives comprehensive details about locations around the world. It includes a route planner for driving, biking, walking, and public transit from one place to another. New improvements will now provide electric vehicle drivers with more information to simplify longer journeys.

Google Maps now includes a feature on mobile that uses artificial intelligence to provide summaries about the precise location of a charger, which can be especially helpful in large, multi-level parking lots.

Google will use AI to condense user reviews of EV chargers, offering detailed directions to specific chargers.

These summaries are created from millions of reviews by users on Google Maps, noting details such as the type of plug and how long charging takes.

In Maps, drivers will receive detailed summaries that guide them directly to the charger.

The advantages of AI summarization include saving money and easier access to information. AI summarization can pull out important details from various sources like documents, technical materials, and especially customer reviews. This allows more time for acting on information rather than searching through it.

AI summarization

AI Summarization

There are two main forms of AI summarization that are extractive and abstractive.

Extractive summarization: uses statistics to find the most important sentences.

Abstractive summarization: creates new sentences that capture the key ideas of the text.

Google Maps has announced that you will soon be able to view nearby charging stations on your car’s map, showing details such as the availability of ports in real time and the speed of charging.

What issues will Google’s AI summarization address?

Issues with complex areas and finding chargers

It should become simpler to locate chargers in confusing places, such as multi-story parking garages, with the upcoming features in Google Maps. In the next few months, AI-powered summaries on Google Maps will provide precise locations of chargers, using useful data from user reviews. This will assist you in knowing exactly where to go.

Issues with knowing charger reliability

Sometimes, there isn’t enough information available about the dependability of charging stations along your route. Google Maps uses the millions of reviews added daily to provide reliable, current details about chargers.

To enhance this, Maps will display a charger’s review page. It will then ask you several questions, such as if your charging was successful, which plug type you used, and how long you waited to charge. Before you leave the page, Google Maps will request that you share details about the success of your charging session.

Issues with finding hotels that offer charging facilities

When you want to stay at hotels that have charging stations, it’s often unclear which ones provide this service and whether they are reliable. Now, if you’re booking overnight stays, a new EV filter on google.com/travel will allow you to easily locate hotels in Search that have EV charging available on site.

Challenges with planning long journeys

Planning multi-stop trips requires a careful approach to charging. You need to consider your route, whether it’s through rural or urban areas, and what facilities are near future charging stations.

The updated Google Maps will recommend the optimal charging points along your route, depending on your battery’s level of charge. This feature will be rolled out worldwide in the next few months for vehicles equipped with Google technology.

Over a year ago, I looked into reliable and detailed charging station maps to assist EV drivers in locating stops on their routes.

We sought the assurance that we could easily find a charger and trust the accuracy of the information regarding its availability and operation. At that time, and still today, certain elements set apart excellent charging station maps from average or poor ones.

What we think?

I think Google Maps will make driving an electric car easier. With new updates, finding chargers won’t be stressful anymore. I can see if chargers are free before I get there, and get directions right to the spot.

This helps a lot in big parking lots. It’s great that I can also check if hotels have chargers. Planning long trips will be less worrying, knowing I can charge my car easily along the way.
