Most individuals don’t think about the modem when looking to purchase a new smartphone, and there’s no obvious reason why they should. However, this is becoming an important topic for many Pixel users.
Lately, the Pixel series has faced significant problems with connectivity. Fortunately, these issues have been decreasing with each new model. The forthcoming Pixel 9 series is expected to be even more reliable.
A source from Google has informed Android Authority about modem improvements in the upcoming Pixel 9 series. These enhancements include important features like satellite connectivity.
Essential Advantages of a Good Modem
Since 2021, when Google began using its partially custom-made Tensor chips, modems have caused issues in Pixel phones. These chips were made together with Samsung’s S.LSI division, leading Google to choose Exynos modems to make the development process easier. Earlier Pixel models used Qualcomm solutions instead.
Sadly, the software on the new modems was unstable at first. From my own use of the Pixel 6, I experienced instances where the modem would fail and cause other parts, like sensors, to stop working too. Many other users also reported connectivity problems with the Pixel 6.
The new modem will be included in all Tensor G4 devices with cellular capabilities, such as the Pixel 9 series and the upcoming Pixel Fold.
Additionally, our source revealed that Google is beginning to develop a 5G tablet, nicknamed “clementine,” which will use the same modem. At this time, it’s uncertain if or when this tablet will be available in the market.
Thankfully, as the technology improved, these problems became less frequent. With the introduction of the Tensor G2 and the Exynos Modem 5300—also used in the Pixel 8 series—the modem issues decreased.
However, they haven’t completely disappeared. For instance, users of the Pixel 7 and 8 have faced issues following the March 2024 update. According to a recent survey we conducted, nearly 60% of participants reported experiencing these problems.
The upcoming Tensor G4 chip, debuting in the Pixel 9 series, features the new Samsung Modem 5400. Although it isn’t a Qualcomm modem, which some might prefer, it represents an improvement from earlier models.
Our source did not provide specific details, but we can anticipate that it will be quicker and more energy-efficient than its predecessors. The software stack has also been updated to enhance stability. Additionally, it includes support for 3GPP Rel. 17, which enables 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN), essentially meaning satellite communication.

Satellite communication in upcoming Pixel phones
As we have mentioned before, Google has advanced in adding satellite messaging support to Android 15. With the NTN capabilities of the Exynos Modem 5400, the Pixel 9 series will be the initial models to support this satellite feature built into Android.
Initially, T-Mobile, in partnership with SpaceX, will offer the feature, with the possibility of other carriers joining later. This satellite connection will support texting but not voice calls.
Additionally, a dedicated app named “Satellite Gateway” will facilitate easy communication with emergency services through a function known as “Emergency SOS.”
We have had hints before about how this might function, and now we can provide more specifics. Initially, you’ll answer some simple questions to clarify your situation.
You will have the option to inform your emergency contacts, and then you can text with emergency services to receive the assistance you require. Many of the questions will offer preset answers to speed up the process. Below, we’ve included a table with some of the questions to show you how it operates.
What we think?
I think the new Pixel 9 will be great for staying connected. It has a new modem that should fix past issues with dropping signals. Now it can even connect to satellites, which sounds amazing for emergencies or when no other signals are around.
I’m excited to see if it really works better. Plus, being able to text emergency services directly could be a lifesaver. I’m looking forward to trying it out!
