    Twenty-Four Hours Later

    While the court order was being processed, the platform’s operators were already moving. They registered MissAVWS under the .ws top-level domain — administered by SamoaNIC in Samoa — and pointed traffic there. By the time most users noticed anything had changed, a working replacement was already live.

    The technical execution involved switching nameserver configurations at the registrar level. Before the seizure, MissAV.com had used Cloudflare for DNS resolution and DDoS protection. After the court order took effect, DNS records shifted to Namecheap-controlled servers.

    The operators, retaining registrar-level access through Namecheap, redirected traffic by updating nameserver records — a process that requires no cooperation from the seized domain itself.

    A second domain under the .ai extension, governed by Anguilla’s domain authority, was registered as additional redundancy. Two replacement addresses under two separate non-U.S. jurisdictions simultaneously reduces the risk that a single enforcement action can eliminate access entirely.

    The Jurisdictional Gap That Made MissAVWS Possible

    American courts can seize .com domains because the .com registry — VeriSign — operates under U.S. authority and must comply with domestic court orders. The .ws and .ai registries operate under entirely different sovereign frameworks. U.S. court orders carry no direct authority over SamoaNIC or the Anguilla administration.

    This is not a loophole so much as a structural feature of how the internet’s domain system is organized. The original seizure worked precisely because MissAV.com was on a U.S.-jurisdictional TLD. The replacement domains were chosen specifically because they are not.

    Pursuing enforcement against .ws or .ai domains would require navigating Samoan or Anguillan legal processes — systems without the same enforcement infrastructure or history of compliance with U.S. intellectual property actions. The practical difficulty is substantially higher, which is exactly why those TLDs were chosen.

    The Numbers That Explain Why This Matters Commercially

    The platform draws over 300 million visitors monthly, placing it inside the global top 60 websites by traffic. In Japan it ranks within the top 15. Semrush data from late 2025 showed 126.5 million visits recorded on the .ws domain alone, with users viewing an average of 16.3 pages per session and a bounce rate of 23.22 percent.

    FANZA blocks overseas access to its own paid platform. That means MissAVWS is not competing abstractly — it directly captures the international audience that FANZA’s own service cannot reach. The commercial relationship between the two platforms is zero-sum in the markets where FANZA has chosen not to serve users directly.

    The $4.5 million judgment, while substantial as a legal outcome, needs to be understood against traffic numbers of this scale. Collecting on that judgment requires the plaintiff to locate assets in a jurisdiction where enforcement is possible — a separate challenge from winning the court ruling itself.

    Why Domain Seizures Rarely Produce Permanent Results

    Obtaining a court order takes months of legal preparation, filing fees, attorney costs, and coordination with anti-piracy firms like Battleship Stance, which assisted Will Co. in this case. The process involves multiple institutions and substantial resources. Registering a new domain takes minutes and costs under twenty dollars.

    The enforcement mechanism and the evasion mechanism operate on entirely different timescales and resource scales. Each successful seizure disrupts access briefly. Operators with sufficient technical capability and advance preparation can restore access faster than enforcement agencies can identify and pursue the new addresses.

    This dynamic does not make enforcement pointless. Sustained legal pressure imposes real operational costs — legal exposure, infrastructure instability, user trust erosion across repeated migrations, and the financial liability of judgments that can sometimes be collected.

    But permanent elimination of a technically capable platform through domain seizure alone has not proven viable at this scale.

    The Risks That Users Often Underestimate

    Platforms operating outside conventional legal frameworks carry specific risks that deserve direct acknowledgment rather than being treated as footnotes.

    Security standards on unregulated sites vary widely and are not subject to external audit. Malware distribution through advertising networks, intrusive tracking without disclosure, and data collection practices that would be illegal under regulated frameworks all represent genuine exposure for users.

    The absence of regulatory accountability means there is no enforcement mechanism for failures in any of these areas.
