TikTok announced on Thursday that it will now automatically tag videos and images created using artificial intelligence.
TikTok stated in a press release that AI-generated content on the app will be marked with “Content Credentials.” This digital watermarking technology comes from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity.
“Content Credentials attach metadata to content, which we can use to instantly recognize and label [AI-generated content],” TikTok said. “This capability started rolling out today on images and videos, and will be coming to audio-only content soon.”
TikTok already tags content created with its own AI effects and asks creators to mark any realistic AI content they make. The new update will automatically tag AI-generated content that is uploaded from other platforms.
The update follows warnings from lawmakers and experts about the potential dangers of AI in the 2024 election, including an increase in deepfakes and false information.
TikTok also said it would become part of the Content Authenticity Initiative, a group led by Adobe that aims to set standards for making the creation of digital images, videos, or audio clips clear and traceable in the industry.
In February, TikTok joined 20 major tech companies, including Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, in a commitment to fight AI-driven misinformation during this election cycle.
TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains unclear after President Joe Biden signed a law in April requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app within nine months or face a ban in the U.S. TikTok has responded by suing the U.S. government, claiming the law infringes on First Amendment rights.

I think TikTok’s new tagging system for AI-generated content is a good step. It will help people know what is real and what is not.
This is important because there’s a lot of fake information out there, especially during elections. But I’m not sure if it will solve all problems. Some people might still be tricked by deepfakes or fake news, even with tags.
