Punto Banco is the most commonly offered version of Baccarat at both land-based and online casinos. Once bets are placed, all decisions are determined automatically by fixed rules.

The game involves two hands: Punto (Player) and Banco (Banker). You don’t receive your own hand like in other card games. Instead, you bet on which hand you think will get closest to nine, or if both will finish with the same value.

As part of many live casino platforms operating under regulated gaming frameworks, Punto Banco is delivered through live casino platforms using standardised rules and controlled procedures. This helps maintain consistency in gameplay and transparency across licensed platforms.

The objective

Your goal is to predict which hand – Player or Banker – will get closest to nine. The highest possible value is nine, and the lowest is zero. If both hands match, the round results in a Tie.

Card values work like this:

  • Aces count as one
  • Cards two to nine keep their face value
  • 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings count as zero

Only the last digit of a total counts. For example, if a hand has a seven and an eight (totalling 15), the value is five. You only count the unit digit. If a hand contains a three and a six (totalling nine), the value is nine – the strongest hand possible.

How cards are dealt?

At the start of each round, two cards are dealt face-up to both the Player and Banker positions. These come from a shoe typically containing six or eight standard decks.

Whether a third card gets drawn isn’t your choice – it follows strict rules that apply automatically.

The third card rule can seem complex at first, but you don’t need to memorise it. During gameplay, the dealer handles everything automatically. However, understanding when cards are drawn can help you follow the action more easily.

When a third card gets drawn:

Player hand:

  • Total of 0-5: Player draws a third card
  • Total of 6-7: Player stands
  • Total of 8-9: It’s a “natural” and both hands stand

Banker hand:

  • Banker draws if the total is 0-2
  • With a total of 3-6, the Banker draws or stands based on the Player’s third card value
  • Banker always stands on 7, and a natural 8 or 9 ends the round

The Banker’s decision when holding 3-6 depends on what the Player’s third card was. For instance, if the Banker has a total of three, they’ll draw unless the Player’s third card was an eight. These nuances are all handled automatically, so you can focus on placing your bets rather than tracking the rules.

Betting options

There are three main bets in Baccarat. You can bet the Player hand will be closer to nine, the Banker hand will be closer to nine, or that both hands will tie with the same total.

Some tables may also offer side bets, like betting on either hand receiving a pair, or predicting the total number of cards dealt in a round. These side bets can add variety to your gameplay, though they typically come with different odds compared to the main betting options.
